The Children’s Shelter is a private, nationally accredited nonprofit corporation. Since 1901, we have provided a safe haven for child survivors of abuse, neglect, and abandonment in San Antonio and Bexar County. Today, The Children’s Shelter is a trauma-informed care certified organization that provides a continuity of care through an array of a family of services. We provide emergency shelter and therapeutic foster care for children and youth. Our Family Strengthening programs teach nurturing parenting skills to vulnerable families and help families overcome crises. Finally, our mental health clinic provides trauma-sensitive therapeutic interventions for children and families impacted by maltreatment.

Ronald McDonald House

Many families travel far from home and spend several weeks or months to get treatment for their seriously ill or injured children – a long time to be away or to divide a family. And, for children facing a serious medical crisis, nothing seems scarier than not having mom and dad close by for love and support. A Ronald McDonald House provides a place for families to call home so they can stay close by their hospitalized child at little to no cost.

Our Houses are built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on the health of their child – not where they can afford to stay, where they will get their next meal or where they will lay their head at night to rest. We believe that when a child is hospitalized the love and support of family is as powerful as the strongest medicine prescribed.

Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio

Volunteers are the heart of our organization. There are many possibilities on how to get involved with Habitat (whether an individual or a group) and help us build for better. At Habitat, volunteers are the heart of our organization! More than 13,500+ volunteers assist in our home building program every year. They build homes, raise funds, work in the offices, feed hungry volunteers, work at our Home Centers and more. Our volunteers work alongside our homeowners and help them on their journey toward home-ownership.

The san antonio food bank actively fights hunger and feeds hope in San Antonio and Southwest Texas. Founded in 1980, the San Antonio Food Bank serves one of the largest service areas in Southwest Texas. Our focus is for clients to have food for today but to also have the resources to be self-sufficient in the future.

Headwaters San Antonio

Our 53-acre nature sanctuary is home to the Blue Hole, the source spring of the San Antonio River. We are a nonprofit Earth care ministry of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. Headwaters at Incarnate Word is restoring our urban landscape through the removal of invasive plants and propagation of native species in an effort to increase biodiversity and benefit local wildlife. We offer educational programs for adults and children that focus on nature, local history, and conservation of our shared natural and cultural resources. Finally, we provide a sanctuary where people are encouraged to reflect and find meaning in their connection with the Earth, themselves, and each other.
